When you decide to do your own Electric Car Conversion it is crucial that you have reliable and detailed Electric Car Plans. I have found such plans and will share them with you. But before I would like to explain what else you’ll need for a successful electric car conversion.
- You’ll need simple tools which you probably already own. Tools like wrenches, drills, etc. – You’ll need one or two men who can help you carry and hold some heavy parts. Actually you could do this on your own very well but with help it’s just easier and faster. – Of course a working place. I prefer a garage but of course you also can work outside in the lane.
As you may know your new vehicle will produce no fumes. It’s because the car travels only with electricity and not with gas. This is why it doesn’t matter which car you choose for your conversion. Whether it is gas or diesel doesn’t really matter. The only thing that is important is that you choose a car with manual transmission. Do not try to convert a car with automatic transmission. This won’t work!
Now I’ll tell you how much my first Electric Vehicle conversion costed. My first converted car was a Toyota Tacoma. In my opinion such small trucks are the best choice because of their light weight and the much space for the batteries which they offer.
A big plus for the detailed electric car plans is the fact that they offer a source where you get the batteries and the motor for your conversion completely for free. This is why I managed to do my electric car conversion for $400!
“Electric Car Conversion Lists” is the best place to learn a lot about electric car conversion. They even offer a complete plan for converting you car into an electric vehicle.

Electric car conversion in India?
Hi,
I am planning on buying an old car frame and converting it into an electric car by adding the motor and batteries. Has anyone in India done something like this if so I would like to know the costs involved in the process.
More importantly can I register such a car in India, I live in Kolkata so that would be a factor too I guess. Any procedures involved would be nice to know too.
Thanks in advance.
Thanks for the suggestions but I guess I will figure out the details as i go through with it. What I am more worried about is the registration as all my work will be in vain if I cannot get my car registered In India. Knowing India’s bureaucratic system I have a feeling that registration will be harder than making the car itself so it would be nice to know beforehand what I have to do to get an electric car registered and do I follow normal procedure or have to do something else.
Dear friend conversion of a petrol/diesel fuelled car is a difficult task.
If you want to come up with this project you can do like this
1. Take an old electric fork lift of Macnaill, Toyoto or any make and dismantled all the parts
2. These fork lifts are operated at normally 72 volts batteries (32 cells)
3. Remove electric DC motor of 72 volts
4. Remove Contactors and wiring
Now fit the batteries at safe possible position in your project car
Fit the DC motor before the differential and connect it through propeller shaft u joints
Connect the DC cables to Contactor switch through proper wiring
Once the batteries are charged the vehicle, may move for 50 to 60 kms.
But cost of the New batteries is aroundRs 3 lakhs, Electric Motor 55,000
Due to the high initial cost, and covers below 100 kms in on charge these Electric Cars are not becoming popular
I’ve come across an excellent resource on how to convert your gas guzzler into a highly efficient Electric Motor vehicle. And the good news is that building Electric Cars isn’t very hard to do. You will need 10 – 12 deep cycle batteries, an electric motor battery charger, controller and (of course) a good set of Electric Car Conversion Motor plans.....
