The term ’sovereign wealth funds’ refers to state owned funds which may consist of stocks, bonds, property assets and other financial instruments. It is often the case the country in question has large reserves with which it can invest – for example its citizens may have saved so much money collectively that it makes sense to invest it and get more back. An example of this use of sovereign wealth funds might be that of Norway, which has a huge amount of wealth and it has wisely invested to secure the future for its ageing population.

This article looks at some of the major sovereign wealth funds around the world – looking at what they invest in and how successful they are.

Abu Dhabi Investment Authority

In terms of assets, the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority is the world’s largest by a long way. The latest figures for the fund state that it is worth a huge 627 Billion dollars. The fund was started in 1976 by Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan – the founder of the United Arab Emirates. It was set up to invest the vast surpluses that the country produced (overwhelmingly the result of oil sales) into low risk investment schemes.

It was unusual at the time because most governments invested any surpluses they had into gold or short term credit. In recent years (2008 onwards), like many sovereign wealth funds, it has been investing in residential property in places like London, Paris, Rome, New York and Chicago. The UK portfolio alone is thought to be worth more than 4 billion dollars.

Saudi Arabian Monetary Agency

This sovereign wealth fund was started for, as the name suggests, Saudi Arabia. It started life in 1952 when Saudi Arabia did not have a monetary system of its own. The SAMA was instrumental in helping Saudi Arabia boom in the 1970s and 1980s – helping the country invest its vast wealth overseas. Many oil rich nations such as this are keen to make international investments because at some point their oil reserves will run out and they will need to find another way to bring wealth to their people. It is thought that the fund is worth an impressive 431 Billion dollars.

These are just two of the world’s largest sovereign wealth funds; there are many more but most tend to have a substantial surplus created by having some kind of huge natural supply of oil or gas. Some also have a huge wealth in terms of simply having a huge workforce that has expanded the economy to a massive extent: China is a good example of this.
